The fourth round of the CAMS Australian GT Championship netted a best result of the season for Ricky Capo, the young Victorian claiming his first ever Australian GT round podium.
Having made the move into Australian GT for the 2016 season, Capo spent the first three rounds of the year coming to grips with the competition.
“It’s a really fun category,” he enthuses. “It’s really fun to be racing against such top level drivers and in these amazing cars.”
Two fifth place finishes at Phillip Island, Capo’s home circuit, proved the reigning Australian Formula 3 champion’s potential in the class.
It was a confidence building weekend made extra special by the fact it came at its home circuit.
“It’s a track I really love. I couldn’t really think of a better track to get my first podium at to be honest.
“Going into the round we were all really confident because we did have a test day a couple of weeks prior,” he continues.
“I felt really comfortable in the car; the most comfortable I’ve been all season.”
The result has filled the Modena Engineering driver with enthusiasm heading into the final two rounds of the championship at Townsville and Highlands Motorsport Park.
Though he has no experience of either, both present a challenge Capo is looking forward to tackling.
“I haven’t been to either of those tracks,” he admits.
“It’s going to be a really interesting and challenging just to learn the track as fast as I can and hopefully be as competitive as we were at Phillip Island.”
The fifth round of the CAMS Australian GT Championship will be held at Townsville’s Reid Park on July 8 – 10, with two 60-minute races scheduled for the weekend.
Australian GT is in action again this weekend as the CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series heads to Winton Motor Raceway for the second round of the series.
Action at Winton kicks off on Friday afternoon with both races on Sunday streamed live online.
