A sensational lap from Jake Camillieri has handed the MARC Cars Australia driver his first CAMS Australian GT Trophy Series pole position at Queensland Raceway.
Set early in the session, the stunning lap stood the test of time to secure top spot ahead of fellow MARC Cars Australia entry Jack Smith.
“I knew if Jack did a good first sector he’d have to really be on it for the rest of the lap because my car was really good in sectors two and three,” Camillieri beamed after the session.
It was a record setting result, not only for Camilleri but also for MARC Cars Australia, as the Queensland based squad claimed its maiden Australian GT pole position in style by locking out the front row.
“It’s great to be part of history,” Camilleri enthused. “The team has done such a great job this weekend to have three of us up there.”
There was just 0.08s between the fastest two qualifiers in the second closest qualifying result in Australian GT Trophy Series history.
Third on the grid was the Morgan Haber/Rob Thomsen MARC Focus V8 with the second row completed by Travers Beynon.
The impressive rookie ramped up his pace throughout the half-hour session in the Audi R8 LMS to set the fourth best time.
He pipped Keith Kassulke by less than a tenth of a second, making for four MARC Cars Australia entries in the top five places.
Audi R8 LMS driver Rob Smith pushed his Southern Star Developments entry to the limit, ending the day with a 1:12.771 in sixth place.
Having sat second in the early running, Scott Hookey left nothing on the table in his Ferrari 458 Challenge to set a 1:13.454, enough to see the Queensland local seventh best.
Jason Busk and Sam Gerrard racked up 21 laps in the session to claim their place on the grid ahead of Michael Benton in a pair of MARC Focus V8s.
The first of two 50-minute races gets underway at 10:35 tomorrow morning with Race 2 following at 14:00.
Both races will be streamed live via the Australian GT website – www.australiangt.com.au
