A capacity grid of 32 cars are set to take the grid for the second round of the CAMS Australian GT Championship at Albert Park this weekend.
Two weeks on from the opening round of the season in Adelaide, it marks the first time Australian GT has featured on the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix programme since 2010.
A pair of Ferrari 488 GT3s will take to the circuit as Vicious Rumour Racing and Maranello Motorsport give the Italian marque’s latest creation its global competition debut.
Also making its first appearance is Tony Quinn’s brand-new Aston Martin Vantage GT3, the former championship runner-up having shared a McLaren 650S GT3 with son Klark Quinn around the streets of Adelaide.
The Albert Park circuit is one which will suit the GT cars, according to BMW Team SRM driver Max Twigg.
Twigg was victorious last time Australian GT visited Albert Park and believes the Grand Prix circuit will bring out the best in the competition.
“It’s a very fast, flowing change of direction type of circuit,” Twigg explained of the Albert Park layout. “It has low kerbs so you’re not unsettling the cars with high kerbs or change of direction.
“You have to maintain momentum and keep up your road speed. If you make a mistake on the exit of a corner it chases you for nearly the whole lap, you don’t ever get it back.
“It’s not going to be hard under brakes, change direction, hard on the gas; it’s a fast, flowing, beautiful circuit. It’s a circuit that suits these GT cars.”
Justin McMillan and Glen Wood currently head the CAMS Australian GT Championship for Interlloy M Motorsport Lamborghini.
The Gold Driver Cup, for solo drivers aged over 40 and ranked Pro 4 or below, is currently being led by Roger Lago, who took two podiums at the opening round in Adelaide.
The CAMS Australian GT Championship has four 25-minute races across the 2016 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix weekend.
The first race starts at 18:15 on Thursday afternoon, with two qualifying sessions earlier in the day.
Three further races follow from Friday to Sunday, with races three and four broadcast live as part of Channel Ten’s coverage of the event.
