With escalating Covid-19 numbers in Victoria, increased restrictions have hampered an earlier start to the 2020 Australian GT Championship season than had been proposed forcing organisers to again postpone the start of the sprint campaign until the Bathurst 1000 in October.

The Barbagallo round of the 2019 Australian GT Championship provided some memorable racing during the three-leg GT race around the 2.4-kilometre circuit, a mix of day and night races providing some epic moments, not the least of which was the incident that claimed leader Ryan How in the dying stages of Saturday night’s final race.

Having delayed the start of the Australian GT Championship to negotiate the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-March, organisers were overjoyed to reveal a return to competition just over a week ago, with a four-round season as part of the Motorsport Australia Championships and the Supercars programs, however the recent announcement around the new Victorian outbreak has forced a third change to the proposed calendar.

Off the back of the recent announcement of the 2020 Championship calendar, Australian GT will welcome not only a new commercial partner but a new name to Australian motorsport with International timepiece brand Omologato becoming the ‘Official Timepiece Partner’ for the Championship. The partnership includes the awarding of the ‘Omologato Pole Position’ award for each round of the 2020 AGT season as well as other product promotional activity across the remainder of the year.

Sydney Motorsport Park will host the return of the Australian GT season with organisers revealing they have locked away the opening round of the sprint program as part of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships scheduled for August 14-16.

Australian GT have revealed that they have attracted what looks to be a record field for the opening round of the Australian GT Championship at Mount Panorama across the Easter weekend, with what is fast approaching a grid that will meet full capacity on the iconic 6.213-kilometre circuit.

After claiming the runner-up position in both the 2019 Australian GT Championship [GT4] and the GT4 division of the Australian Endurance Championship, Vantage Racing’s David Crampton has stepped things up another gear ahead of the new season, with the pending arrival of a new MY20 ‘EVO’ spec KTM X-Bow, the passionate GT4 competitor intent on going one better – twice – in season 2020.

One of the changes to the structure of the various 2020 Australian GT Championships sees the introduction of an experienced former international competitor as the new Driving Standards Observer [DSO] for the category, with British-born Marcus Mahy taking on the role, beginning with the GT Sportscar Festival event at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit scheduled for 20-22 March.

Trofeo Motorsport – the Category Managers of GT Production Sportscars which includes the Australian GT Championship, the Australian Endurance Championship and the Australian GT Trophy Series – have unveiled a numberof changes within the structure of the various entities heading into the season proper.

With Covid-19 restrictions beginning to ease around the country, the potential that sporting events will be back on the calendar in the not too distant future has allowed Australian GT to start moving forward, with recent weeks seeing a survey of teams and drivers, whilst further discussions have been had with stakeholders, all focussed on a return to racing.
